Scoring for Fun

There was a goal feast in Wednesday nights NHL action, with the most notable scoring being the New York Rangers blitzing Pittsburgh 6-1 at Madison Square Garden! Ryan Clowe was the stand out with two debut goals in an impressive start, before this he had gone scoreless all season long and Rangers fans will no doubt be delighted that he has discovered his scoring touch again. There was also scoring debuts for John Moore and Derek Brassard- who had only arrived from Columbus hours before!

Goalie Henrik Lundqvist also chipped in with 26 saves and Wednesdays win takes New York to 7th overall in the Eastern Conference. In the absence of Sidney Crosby, the Penguins looked worryingly thin on quality and despite Pascal Dupuis' lone goal, things are starting to look troubling for the Stanley Cup contenders!

Meanwhile Edmonton Oilers three number one picks shone brighly in their 8-2 win against an un-inspired Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome to go five games unbeaten! Despite the Flames going 2-0 up in the first six minutes, 1st star Taylor Hall soon ripped their defence to shreds with a goal and four assists! Fellow 1st overall pick Nail Yakapov scored twice in an equally impressive performance and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, Sam Gagner and a brace from Jordan Eberle would sink the knife deeper into Calgary's chest! After the one-two punch of losing Iginla and Bouwmeester in the space of a week, the Flames need to find quality fast.

Elsewhere a late 3 goal surge in the 3rd period gave the Philadelphia Flyers a surprise 5-3 win over the in form Montreal Canadiens at Wells Fargo Center, the Flyers have recently been under performing and with an impressive performance by Matt Read, this will no doubt inspire some confidence for a late push for a play off spot!

San Jose Sharks once again proved dark horse persona as they beat Minnesota Wild 4-2 at home to claim a sixth straight win! This result moves them into 5th place in the Western Conference above reigning champs LA Kings- this team will be one to watch in the play offs and led by Pavelski's first star performance, their offence is one to take seriously!

Anaheim Ducks led by Captain Ryan Getzlaf, who put Dallas' defence to the sword with a goal and three assists, claimed an important 5-2 win over Dallas Stars which moves them to within two points of Chicago in the Western Conference and after acquiring key forward Matthew Lombardi from Phoenix yesterday- they will be keen to add to their Stanley Cup win in 2007.
