Revenge of the Penguins

After being utterly humilated at 'The Garden' on Wednesday, the Pittsburgh Penguins struck back with an important 2-1 win over New York Rangers at the Consol Energy Center. The first two periods remained scoreless with both Rangers goalie Lundqvist and Penguins' Fleury making several vital stops to get it at a tied game. But new signing Jussi Jokinen gave Pens fans a home debut to cherish as he struck with a goal early in the third period which would ironically turn out to be his only shot on goal the entire evening!

But after would come a lengthy review to debate whether or not a Rangers shot had crossed the line- eventually the decision would be ruled no goal. Rangers fans didnt to wait long though as a mere three seconds after the decision went against them, Derek Stepan won the resulting face-off and set up Rick Nash to hammer home his 14th goal this season!

Eventually after an action packed 3rd period/ Overtime this match was to be decided by a shootout and it was left to new boy Jokinen to beat Lundqvist and win the Penguins the extra point, in doing so he goes level with Parise and Datsyuk with 32 Shoot goals

Head Coach Dan Bylsma surprised many when he announced Jokinen would take the place of Crosby at centre over Evgini Malkin! But his choice could prove to be an important one as the Penguins look for glory- watch this space hockey fans!

You can rarely judge a team on its pre-season performances, but it's fair to say that things at the Rogers Arena are looking shaky. The Canucks are currently 1/4 on their pre-season games, not a great start for new coach John Tortorella . Former coach  Alain Vigneault was fired after the team failed to progress past the the first round of the last two playoffs, along with two assistants. Since joining the NHL in 1970, the Canucks have failed to lift the Stanley Cup. It's a regular occurrence than coaches are fired long before the GMs who brought them in. You can't browse the internet without tripping over people questioning  Mike Gillis ' decision. Struggling Pittsburgh Penguins Fire Mike Johnston

The Pittsburgh Penguins have parted ways with coach Mike Johnston and assistant coach Gary Agnew. It was announced today that Johnston and Agnew would be given a whole load more time to spend with their families over the holiday period, after GM Jim Rutherford relieved them of their coaching duties in Pittsburgh, while dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge, I assume. The Penguins have lost six of their last 10 games, three of those in overtime and the team definitely isn't playing up to its potential. Evgeni Malkin is playing well, as is off-season addition Phil Kessel . But that's not enough, the team are ranked 26th on the power play and 27th on team shooting and goals per game. Times aren't good when the Columbus Blue Jackets are scoring more. Superstar Sidney Crosby's  season has been forgettable by his own, usually phenomenal standards, only six goals so far.
