As the 1960s rumbled on, the NHL and the ‘original six’ teams decided (or relented, depending on how you look at it) that it was time to expand. Next year the NHL expands again as the Las Vegas Desert , Black , Silver , Something Knights will join, the first expansion team in 16 years. So, ahead of that, we’ll be taking a look at the teams that have joined the league over the years. With the addition of the six new teams, the league was split into the East and West divisions. Finally the Detroit Red Wings have given permission for head coach Mike Babcock to begin speaking to other teams. This news has caused a wave of disillusion over Michigan because after taking home the Stanley Cup in 2008- he has become a fan favourite! But where would be the best destination for this man? Here are my top 3 choices for M.B Toronto Maple Leafs  This one is by far the bookies favourite and many were speculating this one as early as last season. As an Ontario boy at heart, this one will no doubt be in the front of Babcock's mind! But although this project may have long term potential, surely it is too much of a short term risk? The Leafs are currently going through yet another rip up and rebuild operation by Brendan Shanahan and I feel there is too much work needed to get where Babcock wants to go. Once more fans of the Edmonton Oilers, will be celebrating as their side have received first overall pick in the NHL Draft Lottery! Seems Connor McDavid will be spending some cold winters over in Alberta in years to come! Buffalo Sabres were no doubt disappointed to land the second overall pick, but will no doubt take consolation that this will probably mean Jack Eichel will be in the state of New York! In what could be one of the biggest depth quality drafts, it could well mean that each team has some great talent for the future. My only real doubt with this decision is that Edmonton has had its fair share of number one picks in the last few years, and still nothing has come of it! People paint McDavid as if he is the next Sidney Crosby of hockey, I just worry that this team is the wrong fit for his talents? Making your NHL debut is always a special moments in any person careers, but tomorrow night when Philadelphia Flyers take on the Winnipeg Jets tomorrow, for 33 year old goalie Rob Zepp - this debut has been 13 years in the making! Originally drafted by the Atlanta Thrashers in 1999, Zepp never signed for the team and instead was drafted by the Carolina Hurricanes in 2001. After that this followed a spells in both the AHL and ECHL from 2001 to 2005. Zepp then tried his fortunes in Europe, firstly in Finland with SaiPa in SM-liga. A seven year stint with Berlin in the German Hockey League would follow this. Zepp's post season performances in Europe however, impressed the Flyer's organization, who prompt signed him for their affiliate Leigh Valley Phantoms. Despite conceding 60 goals, the team from the city of brotherly love has scored 57, only the Penguins and Islanders have scored more in the same division.  Questions need to be asked about the Flyers' defensive performances but there's definitely no issues with the forward lines. Today it was announced who has been nominated for the Hart Memorial Trophy, the three players considered to be the elite players of the NHL this season are as follows. Sidney Crosby ( Pittsburgh Penguins )  Ryan Getzlaf ( Anaheim Ducks ) Claude Giroux ( Philadelphia Flyers ) So which one of these fine players will be rewarded for the efforts? On paper it would appear to be Sidney Crosby who will walk away with the main price because he has had a fine regular season where he lead the league in point scoring. But however, his play off form has been fine to materialize and it was until last nights 2-0 over the New York Rangers that he finally scored his first play off goal. But year in and year out this man is nominated and feels like a far too safer bet- don't get me wrong I am not saying he doesn't deserve to be here, just it is becoming common. This weeks question deals with a long standing hockey playoff tradition that slowly beginning to become a burden on teams- the multiple overtime periods. "Is the overtime system used in the playoffs flawed? Playing repeated 20 minute periods until someone finds twine is tough on the skaters, not to mention the fans and TV schedulers. Should the NHL adopt the same system used during the regular season? Or is it time for something completely different?" Last night during the St Louis Blues 4-3 win over the reigning champions the Chicago Blackhawks - Alexander Steen scored the winner 26 seconds into a third overtime period! Incredible result for this fixture, but there's no denying that fans were kept waiting for too long for a winner this tie, regardless of this being playoff time. Eastern Conference  Detroit Red Wings  v Boston Bruins   This is one of the more difficult series to predict because both teams are of equal quality. The Red Wings hold a 3-1 regular season record against the Bruins, but it has been Boston who tops the Eastern conference and they have been showing this season just why they are contenders. I predict this one to be a tight one, but based on form alone, I have to give this one to the Bruins, sorry Mike! Prediction: Boston Bruins Tampa Bay Lightning v Montreal Canadiens Tampa Bay have been the one of this years real surprise packages, finishing 4th in the Eastern conference despite star Steven Stamkos being injured for a long period and currently holds a 3-1 record against Montreal. But the Canadiens are not a team that should be ruled out (unless Subban goes to the box) and I still think they could spring a surprise here. At 41 years old, NHL great Jaromir Jagr shows no signs of slowing down and his selection in the Czech Republic Olympic team just demonstrates his versatility and after leading his side to the gold medal in the 1998 Nagano Olympics, you can count chickens that he will be one leading stars in this tournament proving that age comes before beauty! Recently while playing for New Jersey, Jagr has now surpassed Steve Yzerman to go seventh overall in the all time goals scored within incredible an 687, his plus his 1391 NHL games played for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Washington Capitals, New York Rangers, Dallas Stars, Philadelphia Flyers, Boston Bruins and recently New Jersey Devils make him the face of modern experience ! At this rate it wouldn't be a shock to see him included in 2018 Olympics in Pyeongchang, Korea! Here is tribute to the great man!

This season's playoffs will be the first to be played under the new divisional structure. It's never too early to make playoff predictions. Of course I've no doubt that the teams below will change, especially with the wildcards. The Philadelphia Flyers recovery story took another impressive step forward as after their 3-1 win over the Montreal Canadiens they increased their home winning streak to 10 games! But incredibly this now lifts the Flyers up to 5th place in the Eastern Conference! In Pennsylvania the gloom seems to be lifting and thanks to the goals of Sean Couturier, Zac Rinaldo and Michael Raffl, the sun may be shining again in the city of brotherly live! Earlier this year I wrote a piece which posed the question ' What's Going On With Philly?' and this was one thing everyone in the city of brotherly love was pondering! To begin this season, the Philadelphia Flyers seemed to be in free fall with only one win from a possible nine games and sat 15th overall in the Eastern Conference- only the Buffalo Sabres seemed to be having a worse time. But since sacking head coach Peter Laviolette in October, new coach Craig Berube has reignited the competitive flames of Philly and currently they have surged up the table to now lie 8th overall in the East with a noteworthy 16 wins to their name and now an outside chance of a play-off appearance- now who would have predicted that? The Philadelphia Flyers, the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres aren't exactly having seasons to write home about. Going into last night's games, the teams had collectively only won 12 games (the same amount as the Phoenix Coyotes). Last night was a reminder that in the NHL, any team can beat any team on the night. Even Buffalo. Buffalo Sabres All three of the Buffalo Sabres' wins had come on the road and welcoming the in-form LA Kings to the First Niagra Center, it didn't look like a home win would be on the cards.  At the end of the first period, the 2012 Stanley Cup champions were a goal to the good after Justin Williams slipped the puck past Ryan Miller in the second minute of the game. Hello fellow hockey fans! As Mike mentioned previous I am currently on Vacation in Canada for hockey season. I have recently left a wonderful 2 day trip to Toronto where a visit to the hockey hall of fame was made (Picture of me with the Stanley Cup will be up soon!) And last night in eating in none other than Wayne Gretzky's restaurant, where four games of hockey were played at once (did feel slightly like David Bowie in The Man who Fell to Earth). Though I did manage to dazzle a Sharks fan called Pat with hockey (if you read this mate- it was great speaking to you!) En route to Montreal now where I shall most likely be viewing Penguins v Flyers as the Habs are not playing. I'll also have the pleasure of watching Rangers v Kings at MSG when I reach New York on Nov 17 and finally Leafs v Islanders last the ACC on November 19. The Washington Capitals should no signs of fading in the absence of star player Alexander Ovechkin last night as they hammered the Philadelphia Flyers 7-0 at the Wells Fargo Center! Things almost got off the wrong start for the visiting capitals when Steve Downie, who was making his debut after arriving from the Colorado Avalanche in mid week, almost beat Capitals goalie Braden Holtby in the opening seconds! But Niklas Backstrom got the party started when after he rifled a shot past Steve Mason after 17.28 to put the away side in front! But it was in the second period that the Capitals should their offensive capabilities and a five goal flurry would soon follow- Joel Ward pushed the advantage to 2-0 after less than 1.24 of the second before Jim Chimera made it three on a breakaway! After Steve Mason's poor display, he was pulled from net shortly after the third goal and replaced by back up Ray Emery. Sadly Emery would fare just as worse when Backstrom grabbed his second off...

The Philadelphia Flyers claimed just their second win of the 2013/14 season with a hard fought 2-1 victory over fellow strugglers the New York Rangers at the Wells Fargo Center. Matt Read put the home side in front after 9.07 of the 1st period as he made the most of a 2 on 1 advantage to shoot past Rangers goalie Cam Talbot and give Philadelphia the lead! Brad Richards then levelled the scores for New York after 18.56 to set up an interesting battle. The Flyers kept Talbot busy in net for the majority of the second period but it wasn't until 3.03 of the third period that Braydon Coburn 's long range effort flew in to give Philly a much needed win! Currently the Flyers lie 15th in the Western Conference and are currently in a heated battle with the Buffalo Sabres for the wooden spoon- good luck lads!

Goaltender Martin Biron announced his retirement today. Martin Biron  ‏ @ martybiron43 After thinking about it it with my family, I've decided to retire as a player and move on to a new chapter. Thank you all for your support. Biron had most recently played for the New York Rangers but last week was placed on waivers and assigned to the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack. The Quebec native first made his NHL debut in 1995 when he was drafted 16th overall by the Buffalo Sabres. He spent five years in the juniors and in 2000, became the Sabres main goalie once Dominik Hasek was traded to Detroit. After the 2004-05 lockout, he was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, finding success, especially in the postseason. Unfortunately for Biron, the Flyers had signed Ray Emery and Brian Boucher, leaving Biron surplus to requirements. Biron spent three seasons in Philly before being traded to the New York Islanders. The Vancouver Canucks helped end a two game losing streak with a late winner in a 3-2 win over the Philadelphia Flyers at the Wells Fargo Center last night! Though the game was notable for the fact that coach John Tortorella chose to separate the ever present Sedin Brothers duo onto different offensive lines! But the Canucks win was anything but easy and after rookie Tye McGinn put the Flyers in front after 12.26 of the 1st period, but incredibly Vancouver levelled only 10 seconds later through a neat finish from Ryan Kesler! In the second period McGinn again got the home fans excited when he scored only 2.10 into the second period and despites Vancouver's best efforts they couldn't find a way past Flyers goalie Steve Mason! Tortorella's big game occured with six minutes to play in the third period when he chose to move Chris Higgins onto the top line in place of Daniel Sedin and it was this man who tied the scores at 2-2 after 7.31 minutes played off an assist from...

At the start of the fifth game of the season, the Detroit Red Wings were 2/4 and hadn't scored a single powerplay goal. Sure they'd done pretty well on the penalty kill, fending off some serious five on three attacks, but after ten attempts, had not been able to take man advantage and grab some goals. That changed last night when the Red Wings welcomed the Struggling Philadelphia Flyers to the Joe Louis Arena.  Detroit didn't take long to open the scoring when Todd Bertuzzi , promoted to the first line, scored a great wrap-around after Michael Raffl went to the box for hooking. Raffl had been called up to deal with the Flyers' injury woes. The second period brought more goals and more penalties. Luke Schenn 's trip to the box allowed Niklas Kronwall the chance to remind us he's not just there to flatten the opposition. The Philadelphia Flyers aren't having a great start to the season. The team is currently 0/3 having lost to Toronto, Montreal and Carolina. In total the team has scored three goals and conceded nine. In addition to missing the playoffs last season, the writing was on the wall that something had do change. The winds of change are blowing through Philadelphia and head coach Peter Laviolette is out. Assistant coach Craig Berube will be taking over.
