Rangers Give Tortorella The Chop
Today the New York Rangers have announced that Head Coach John Tortorella has been sacked by the franchise after four seasons in charge! After a season that included 26 regular season wins, it has viewed by many as a disappointment and saw them weakly eliminated from the Eastern Conference Semi Final by Boston and seen some dramatic player shake ups such as demoting Brad Richards to the fourth line for the playoffs before eventually benching him and the decline in form by former star Marion Gaborik which eventually saw him traded to Columbus.
Tortorella has been popular with the fans since arriving in 2009 and three times has been listed for a Jack Adams Trophy and guided them to a Conference appearence last year- but it appears that patience has finally run out and his style of defensive play has failed to turn New York into a goal machine despite the acquisition of Rick Nash and this year the Rangers barely squeaked a playoff place!
Torts appeared to see the writing on the wall after their Game 7 win against Washington when he admitted he had failed to get his players into the proper mindset to play another round! In a statement by GM Glen Sather he said "Our goal is to win the Stanley Cup, and I feel this is a decision that had to be made," Sather said. "As far as John is concerned, he was a little bit shocked, but he's a gentleman and he took it very well."
Both of us here at Seven Days in Hockey will miss this guy dearly because no one does a press conference like JT! And truly he didn't give a damn who he upset and some of his quotes were just pure gold! As a tribute to the is man here is a collection of his Greatest Moments!
Come Back soon John- there's another sideline just waiting for your to go bonkers again! Vancouver might just make a nice place (not that I'm rushing you!)
