Playoff Second Round Predictions

Sorry this is late. Didn't check the schedule. After my reasonable success with the first round (7/8 correct) here's my predictions for the second round. If you place any bets and lose. I'm not responsible :)

Chicago Vs Detroit

The Red Wings were sometimes brilliant and sometimes poor in the first round against the Ducks. For this reason I reckon they'll take a game or two. However the Blackhawks are currently one of the best teams in the league and don't rely on individual performances. My heart says Red Wings a; cos I'm biased and b; The Red Wings have reasonable form against Chicago. My head says Chicago though so as much as it pains me to say it...

Prediction: Chicago


LA Vs San Jose

At the time of writing, the Kings have already taken the lead with a 2-0 win over the Sharks. This is a tricky one. The Sharks swam circles around the Canucks in the first round but this seems to be more down to how poor the Canucks played and their general lack of discipline. This will be a close series.

Prediction: LA Kings


Pittsburgh Vs Ottawa

 The Pens are pretty much at full strength now and won the first game comfortably. The Sens will put up a fight but I can't see the Penguins throwing this away.

Prediction: Pittsburgh
Boston Vs New York

 Both the Bruins and the Rangers finished their series on final game deciders and included some high scoring games. Patrice Bergeron is back to full fitness and this will give the Bruins the edge in what will also be a close series. I predict a final game decider.

Prediction: Boston

The Sins Of The (Vancouver) Father

You can rarely judge a team on its pre-season performances, but it's fair to say that things at the Rogers Arena are looking shaky. The Canucks are currently 1/4 on their pre-season games, not a great start for new coach John Tortorella . Former coach  Alain Vigneault was fired after the team failed to progress past the the first round of the last two playoffs, along with two assistants. Since joining the NHL in 1970, the Canucks have failed to lift the Stanley Cup. It's a regular occurrence than coaches are fired long before the GMs who brought them in. You can't browse the internet without tripping over people questioning  Mike Gillis ' decision. Struggling Pittsburgh Penguins Fire Mike Johnston

The Pittsburgh Penguins have parted ways with coach Mike Johnston and assistant coach Gary Agnew. It was announced today that Johnston and Agnew would be given a whole load more time to spend with their families over the holiday period, after GM Jim Rutherford relieved them of their coaching duties in Pittsburgh, while dressed as Ebenezer Scrooge, I assume. The Penguins have lost six of their last 10 games, three of those in overtime and the team definitely isn't playing up to its potential. Evgeni Malkin is playing well, as is off-season addition Phil Kessel . But that's not enough, the team are ranked 26th on the power play and 27th on team shooting and goals per game. Times aren't good when the Columbus Blue Jackets are scoring more. Superstar Sidney Crosby's  season has been forgettable by his own, usually phenomenal standards, only six goals so far.
