Will Patrick Kane Scandal Affect His Career?

Only a matter of weeks after hoisting the Stanley Cup for a third time, Patrick Kane is trapped in the eye of a major storm. The Chicago Blackhawks winger is being investigated over an alleged sexual assault while at home in Hamburg, NY. This scandal has led to him being removed from the cover on the NHL 16 game and the Conn Smyth winner has had his once sparkling image has now been firmly altered.

Kane made the news once before for some troublesome off ice antics. Back in 2009 he was charged with assaulting a cab driver after a drunken night out in Buffalo, NY. While this incident might not have been life changing, it seems this current case could well be. Kane has always been one of the key figures of one of the most exciting and dominant attacking forces in Hockey. A 1st overall draft pick in 2007, he has scored over 205 goals and 557 points from 576 regular season games.

A reliable and dangerous force on the top line, Blackhawks fans believed this man could do wrong. Scandals like this though can follow a man around and life after the fallout can be harsh and uncomfortable. Slava Voynov after being jailed for 90 days for assaulting his wife is going to find life hard should he be able to re-enter the NHL. In an era influence by the Ray Rice attitude of boys just acting out, the NHL is beginning to clamp down on this kind of behavior.  Players like Kane are expected to behave like role models both on and off the ice to the fan who adore them. How will being investigated for taking advantage of a girl endear him to hockey fans?

The whole facts of the case are up for dispute and I will lay off from saying anything personal on this man or the event until later. Having this hung over him could well make Kane a target for opposing players on the ice, because if there is anything that trash talkers love it is juicy rumors. The NHL has been given final say over how they go ahead with the sexual assault case. By doing this it could still allow Kane to maintain a working relationship with the team. Thi echoes similarly to the Avalanche and Semyon Varlamov when he was arrested for domestic violence.

Kane could also find himself suspended by the Hawks should anything unlawful be found. If this were to happen you have to wonder would there be any way back? Mike Richards is a key example here because his detention for allegedly possessing unlawful pain killers at a Canada/US border crossing led to his termination. I expect that Chicago will want to fight to keep their star winger in the first team and I appreciate things are only in the preliminary stages. Just I fear whether Kane will ever be able to break free from the rumors and theories that surround this.
