Is Dombrowski The Right Red Sox Messiah?
Today the Boston Red Sox announced the appointment of former Detroit GM Dave Dombrowski as the new franchise general manager. After a tough season in Michegan, Dombrowski will be keen to make an impression on a dying Red Sox team. After help guide the Tigers to the 2012 World Series, this team has suffered a downswing in fortunes this year. Despite guiding them to four straight AL Central Division titles the 2015 season has seen Detroit fall from grace. After the departures of key names such as David Price and Yoenis Cespedes, the writing was on the wall.
In Boston though, Dombrowski has a great chance to regain his reputation and aid the Red Sox in their time of need. The last two seasons have been a horror show for the loyal fans and once more they sit bottom of the AL East. Unlike the tight race at the top, the Red Sox sit a staggering 14 games out of first! Their winning record this year is a horrendous 53-66 with a percentage of .445. The howls of disillusion echo loudly around Fenway park and it is hard to comprehend that this is the team that only won a World Series two years prior.
Dombrowski brings with him his own World Series ring from his time at the Florida Marlins and another four play-off appearences. For a team looking to rebuild itself from the bottom up, signing Dombrowski is a smart move for this team. His main asset though is his ability to pick up talented players out of nowhere. In 1992 while at Montreal, he traded Zane Smith for an unknown Dominican outfielder called Moises Alou! At Florida he would invest $1.8 million on a 16 year old kid from Venezuela called Miguel Cabrera! This would later come in handy when in a blockbuster bid with Detroit he would again acquire his man in 2007 coincidentally from the Marlins. Here are a list of his successes in the trade market.
A man who can spot talent in the most unlikely places in a man who will fit in well at Fenway. The Red Sox have talent in the ranks and with veterans such as David Ortiz beginning to dry up, a change is needed. Dombrowski will have to brace himself for the passion and sometimes pure hatred of the Boston faithful. Fail here and you will never be able to show your face again.
On a lighter note- while announcing the arrival of Dombrowski, Blue Jays Sportsnet presenter Shi Davidi found himself bombed by no less than several Star Wars characters. May The Force Be With Shi!
