Top Contenders For New IndyCar Season
Tomorrow, the 2015 Verizon Indycar Series season will get underway in sunny Florida as the Firestone Grand Prix of St Petersburg counts down to the green flag.
Will Power (Team Penske)
Last year's Indycar champion is once again favourite to be among the top contenders in 2015. After being the bridesmaid three times previously, 2014 at long last deservedly promoted Power to the ring of champions. Once more his pacey Penske car is looking dangerous- a fact confirmed today as Power took the pole for tomorrows race and set the track record in the process! After years of being the nearly man, the Australian is taking his chance with both hands!
Ryan Hunter-Reay (Andretti Autosport)
After a championship in 2012 and an Indy 500 win last season, Ryan Hunter-Reay can never be counted out. After two uneven seasons in 2013 & 2014 where both times he not only failed to defend his title, but finished out the top 5, Hunter-Reay will be dying to set the record straight again. His Andretti car may not be the same machine that swept all before it previous- but they are a team who has always come back strong and this year they will eager to prove it!
Scott Dixon (Chip Ganassi Racing)
The three time Indycar champion is one of the true greats of this series and as usual the Kiwi will be among the lead contenders. Last season saw only two wins in his campaign as Dixon finished third overall. This year could well be one of the last that sees him among this field and Chip Ganassi will be keen to see that he comes out on a high. With a Daytona 24 Hours win already his belt this season, Dixon is clearly looking to the future. Does seem a shame that F1 fans never saw him among motorsports elite!
Helio Castroneves (Team Penske)
One of the few true veterans of the field, it seems surprising that Castroneves has never once won a title despite third Indy 500 triumphs! Last season saw him miss out on the big prize by only 62 points and it would be a really pleasure to finally see him claim the ultimate prize. Penske boasts the strongest line up in the Indycar field so the though of Castroneves battling teammate Power until the end once more is a tantalizing prospect.
Simon Pageneud (Team Penske)
After a top 5 finish last year, the talented Frenchman has given his career a major shot in the arm by joining Penske. Last season saw glimmers of what could be a promising future with two wins which briefly put him into contention! This season he could well be the dark horse bet for the Indycar field and with a car that has legs- he may well be able to finally push he more experienced teammates. But will too many talents spoil the broth?
