Toews Leads Blackhawks To Victory
The Ottawa Senators are having a tough time of it recently. With each loss, that playoff spot keeps slipping away. Coming off the back of two homes losses (San Jose and Anaheim), the team needed to rekindle the same spirit that beat the Detroit Red Wings 6-1 a week ago.
Current Stanley Cup holders Chicago aren't exactly having a walk in the park either. A few overtime losses means that the Blackhawks trail the Colorado Avalanche in the Central Division chase.
Last night the Blackhawks welcomed the Senators to the United Center and the high scoring affair meant that for either team to take the edge, the game would require something a bit special.
Step up Jonathan Toews. Last night Toews earned the right to drink for free in any tavern in Chicago. Except that one in Chicago Fire, cos it isn't real.
Andrew Shaw opened the scoring early in the first to give Chicago the lead, only for Milan Michalek to restore parity with one minute left on the clock. The game stayed tight for a while, the second period saw Kyle Turris give Ottawa a 2-1 lead, only for Marian Hossa to score less than a minute later.
Things then started to go right for the Sens, Joe Corvo and Mika Zibanejad put the team from Southern Ontario two goals to the good and forced Chicago to change goalie. A few minutes later, somebody woke up Toews.
Some players are known for stepping up when required. The Blackhawks captain hadn't exactly been quiet, he'd already taken a point for assisting Hossa.
With five and a half minutes left in the second, Toews bested Craig Anderson with a wrap-around goal. Just over a minute into the third period, he then wristed Johnny Oduya's pass to get his second goal.
The hat trick goal came in the middle of the last period when Toews' backhand shot put the Blackhawks 5-4 up. Shaw, who'd opened the scoring for Chicago also scored the team's final goal of the night with six minutes left in regulation to give Chicago a two goal lead.
Third line center Zack Smith was able to grab a consolation goal for the Sens but it wasn't enough and at the end of the night, the home team finished as 6-5 winners. Captain Toews unsurprisingly picked up the first star of the game.
