Winners & Losers of NHL Draft
Winners
Buffalo Sabres
In two short days, Dan Bylsma's new reign in Buffalo already seems a lot brighter. Not only did they selected hot prospect Jack Eichel second overall, but they also pulled off an excellent trade with Colorado swapping Ryan O'Reilly and Jamie McGinn for Nikita Zadarov, Mikhail Grigorenko and J.T Compher. The day before they also acquired Robin Lehner and David Legwand in a trade with Ottawa for the 21st pick! Already their depth quality looks far more impressive than last season. With a top line included, Kane, Bogosian and Eichel, this might be a time to scale back on the Sabres related jokes on this blog.
Edmonton Oilers
Having the first overall pick, selecting Connor McDavid was a guaranteed high point. But new GM Peter Chiarelli also smartly acquired the services of goalie Cam Talbot for New York. While old team the Bruins (we'll get to them later) took a hit, Edmonton is now in the beginning stages of building a team that is actually competitive. McDavid could well be the centre piece on a first line made of number one picks. Ever so slightly the gloom around Rexall Place is lifting.
Russians
In the 2015 NHL Draft, there were more Russians selected than any before. 17 Russian born players were taken including, Ivan Provorov, Denis Guryanov, Evgeny Svechnikov and Ilya Samsonov in the first round.
Losers
Boston Bruins
Fans in Massachusetts will come away angered at this team exited the draft weaker than when they entered. The Bruins traded Dougie Hamilton to Calgary for picks and also traded away Milan Lucic to LA for Martin Jones and Colin Miller. Boston seemed to be hoping to trade with Arizona for the third overall pick, sadly no move materialized. The Bruins did grab Jakub Zobril, Jake DeBrusk, and Zachary Senyshyn as the 13th ,14th and 15th overall picks. However, failing to add more depth to their roster or replace the stars means that next season at TD Garden is now looking bleak.
San Jose Sharks
The Sharks may have selected well with the taking Swiss winger Timo Meier 9th overall, but they shot themselves in the back goalie wise. Antti Niemi was traded to Dallas for a seventh round draft pick. This now leaves San Jose without a starting goalie and some serious questions before the beginning of next season.
