Is Harry Kane The Future of English Football?
Today during Tottenham Hotspur's 0-0 with Burnley in the Premier League, striker Harry Kane was given the captain's armband after Hugo Lloris was taken off injured. Currently the 21 year old is experiencing a break out season in North London. Not only has he scored 29 goals already, but he caught the eye of England Manager Roy Hodgson. 78 seconds and three touches into his England debut v Lithuania, he had his first international goal!
Alan Shearer recently commented on Match of the Day "I am struggling to find a weakness in the young man's game" and he has been described as the typical old fashioned centre forward. Many seem sold on the idea that he is the new future of England football. But although Kane is living the dream currently, we have to ask ourselves is the media perhaps getting ahead of itself? This guy is a strong, pacey striker who seems to have a natural eye for goal. But at only 21, shouldn't we be waiting a couple of years before making that assumption?
England hasn't had this type of striker since Shearer himself retired from the international scene in 2000 and the follow ups have been largely inconsistent. Wayne Rooney may be on course to break Bobby Charlton's record of 49 goals, but he hasn't always convinced at the top level. Kane has certainly made an impression immediately, but scoring against Lithuania although an excellent start, wasn't exactly top opposition. Against Italy midweek, Kane found himself continually frustrated by a steadfast defense. Although the match itself was largely a defensive affair, Kane didn't make the impression many would have hoped.
But his scoring record isn't one to be sneered at and you cannot deny that this young man has been one of the best players in the league this season! Behind Diego Costa and Sergio Aguero, he is holding his own as the top scoring English man. Also it is nice to see that we finally have a talent to become excited about after years of flashes in the pan such as Darren Bent, Andy Carroll and James Beattie. There is a confidence about this guy which is undeniable but thankfully not to the extent where he believes he is bigger than the game itself.
Kane has already led Spurs to a League Cup final this season, where they lost 2-0 to Chelsea. Although he was on the losing side, you can bet that next time he won't repeat the same mistake! Time will tell whether this guy is the real deal or maybe just a one season wonder. But for now, Kane is riding the wave and you can tell he is loving each minute!
