Should NHL Have Las Vegas Franchise?

As rumors continue to circulate about a new possible expansion team for the NHL, Las Vegas seems intent on throwing its hat into the ring. For years now there has been talk about Hockey coming to the Nevada desert and ever since 1997, the city has hosted the annual pre-season game 'Frozen Fury which has proven popular with fans. But although Vegas makes for a very glamorous backdrop, should Gary Bettman bring this great game here?

Positives
  1. Would Make Fine Main Event: Promotion in Las Vegas is second to none and if an NHL franchise came to town, the advertising possibilities are endless. Bringing this kind of game to Nevada would make it the hottest ticket in town along and the kind of spin it could gain may make an ultimate Vegas experience.
  2.  Land for development: The big open space of the desert could open up some big opportunities for Arena's, according to Emily Sadler's fine SN article a new 18,000 seat arena is in the pipeline which will cater for a multitude of sporting events. This kind of development could open up a world of new chances for the city of blinding lights!
  3. Would add numbers to Western Conference: Currently the numbers in the Eastern Conference outweight the West. Adding another franchise would help balance things plus it would throw an exciting new contender into the mix.

Negatives

  1.  Undesirable Location: Taking a hockey team to the middle of the desert is a tough move for any team. The main issue here would be generating a solid fan base who is willing to make the journey. The once a year hockey idea has worked, but are supporters like to pay the high costs to do it year round?
  2. Lack of Sporting History: Las Vegas is very much a party city and has not been well known for its history of sporting achievements. There were brief experiments previously such as the failed CFL franchise Las Vegas Posse but other than that is has been a dry Nevada season sports wise.
  3. Other Cities Better Equipped: Already before a decision has been made, other cities already have arena's built and ready to go. Quebec City is already constructing a new 20,000 seat arena and Seattle already has one ready go! Las Vegas is likely to lengthy 529 day building and gaining permission process- why slow the league down when other cities are more capable?
The NHL has to decide for itself whether it is happy to be seduced by the aura of the neon lights of Vegas and think hard whether this is a solid ground for a franchise? Personally I cannot see Las Vegas being the place that hockey players would wish to live year round. Quebec City has been dying for NHL return ever since the Nordiques rolled over to Denver in 1995- surely this should be the new hockey home?
