Is Stanton Worth Monster Deal?

Last night, it was announced that Miami Marlins star right fielder, Giancarlo Stanton had been signed to a 13 year $325 million dollar contract! This deal is the largest that baseball has ever seen and will no doubt settle the fears of Marlins fans. But is Stanton really deserving of being the richest man in the game?

So far his career stats read well with .271 batting average along with 619 hits, 154 home runs and 399 runs batted in. Since his first at bat in the Sunshine State back in 2010, Stanton has been a bona-fide star for a flagging Miami franchise which last saw success with World Series wins in 1997 and 2003 while still branded the Florida Marlins. His current deal goes above the $277 million deal for Dodgers pitcher, Clayton Kershaw.

But while Kershaw is now a three time Cy Young winner and last seasons NL MVP, Stanton has little show to command such an enormous deal. Last season he won both the Silver Slugger and was the leagues Home Run Champion- but one good season doesn't necessarily make a difference. Ever since their triumph win over the New York Yankees in the 2003 World Series, Miami has never again made the post season and hasn't placed higher than second in NL East Division in that time.

So far there has been a largely negative reaction to the deal because Miami are not known for being big spenders- so this begs the question of just why they thought this man was worth the price? Stanton looks good at bat, that cannot be argued and he has shown signs of sparking this franchise during a frankly dour 2013-14 season at Sun Life Stadium. But this move brings about some possible long term financial issues for the Marlins. By putting all their eggs into one basket., this will limit their options in the trade and free agency market.

Sports in Florida are becoming increasingly dwindling after LeBron James decided to leave the Miami Heat to return back to Cleveland in the NBA and the Florida Panthers seem to be only consistent in losing revenue. Surely the Marlins cannot rely solely on Stanton or any of the young talents they have stacked the selves with over the past year to turn this team into the must see franchise in Florida?

Ever since they traded Miguel Cabrera to the Tigers in 2008, this team has looked desperate to lock in a potential star for the long term. With Stanton this deal just loudly speaks of such desperate measures and if they don't play their cards right it could possibly see Baseball looking for a new home elsewhere. This young cub better bring the bacon home early because otherwise the weight of this deal may just crush him!
