Should Eddie Lack Be Starting For Vancouver?
Once again it seems an age old tale has reared its head again in British Columbia, the Vancouver Canucks goalie crisis! This year has been far from excellent at the Rogers Arena and under the vastly decreasing effect of John Tortorella's leadership (though his attempt to fight the entire Calgary Flames team was just hysterical!), our play off hopes now hang by a thread!
Roberto Luongo was once again restored to starting status in net this year after the bizarre trade of future star Cory Schneider to New Jersey and so far this year he has put up some reasonable numbers including 22 wins, but again he has looked vulnerable shot stopping and his confidence will no doubt have been affected by the emergence of his new backup, Eddie Lack and after the young Swede's star performance in our 2-0 defeat to the Detroit Red Wings, it appears that we might have a problem on our hands as both goalies are of equal quality.
So far in his 22 games in net, Lack has managed 8 wins, inclluding 3 shutouts with a GAA average of 2.22 , whereas Luongo has managed 39 games with only 2 shut outs and a GAA of 2.30! Luongo may more wins but lets face it, double the ice time will do that for you, in Lack's short time in net he lack looked way more confident and wins have looked far more likely and this is reflected in his better numbers so far!
Should Lack get the nod from JT? In my own opinion- yes! Luongo along with some questionable defence has looked all at sea at point this year, when Lack despite a few early nerves is growing into a fine professional and no matter his career takes him, he will serve any team very well. Judging by his excellent form when Luongo was sidelined by an upper body injury earlier this year, we are about to see another changing of the guard at the Rogers!
But then we turn to the problem of Bobby's big bucks contract and Vancouver's reluctance to trade him, I really hope that we don't resort to the same measures as before to keep this man happy, because Luongo has made it plainly clear he really isn't concern whether he stays or goes in BC, but let's face it, which team would be willing to pick up a tab that big? Lack isn't on a massive long term deal so it opens up the risk of him become in a UFA which would teams scrambling for him because in a year dominated by back up goalies coming good, he has been one of the stand outs of this crop!
Again big decisions await Mike Gillis and company- which again is bound to rise anger levels amongst Canuck fans! Please don't give us another repeat lads, we've had enough!
Mike's Edit: It seems like only yesterday that we were wondering what was going to happen with the Luongo/Schneider situation. Here we are again trying to figure out which goalie is going to start for Coach Tortorella.
Given that Schneider was shipped out to New Jersey in a shock move last year, I see the same happening to Lack. The Swede has a much shorter contract than Luongo, better numbers and is younger. That makes him a more attractive proposition.
It also means that the Canucks are becoming a farm team for goalies.
