Is Subban Becoming A Liability?
Mike's question for this week focuses on a defenseman who is currently the talk of the league,
"PK Subban has great skills, but he's also guaranteed to see the inside of the penalty box. Is Subban a liability? Or will he become the franchise player he can?" Damn good question as always mike, let's go to work!
Subban is currently the hot sensation of the Montreal Canadiens and since being drafted in 2007, he has become one of the key elements of this side and last season he was awarded the James Norris Trophy as the leagues best defenseman! This is season his impressive streak has continued and currently he sits on top of the Montreal points scorers list with 33 points which for a D-Man is mighty impressive and currently this ranks him as the 6th high scoring defensive player in the league. Following his selection for the Canadian Olympic Team for Sochi 2014, he certainly has the the flair and presence that has earned him his shot and thus far he is set to become one of the key members of the Habs franchise in years to come.
But although he is capable striding forward, his penalty minutes are becoming a cause for concern! So far PK has racked up over 45 of them, which is even more than resident tough guy Brandon Prust with 44 minutes and seeing as one is paid to trade blows and the other isn't it does beg the question of who is doing their job correctly? Subban is still relatively inexperienced in the big leagues and this shows in some of the calls that go against him- over time, he will have to learn to keep a cool head and not get caught up in the heat of the moment!
Giving away these careless penalties can cost a team a game and sometimes even a shot at cup final and with Subban that can turn the passionate Quebec crowd to being hostile very easily and he will have to watch himself otherwise he will merely be a big target for other teams to draw in to secure a potential power play win!
The next part to this question is can Subban become the franchise player he can be? The answer in the long run is that I hope so because although he has a cocky and swaggering presence on the ice, PK has helped transform the Habs into something a hell of a lot more competitive and barring something drastic, he will more than likely feature on the first line at Sochi. Plus more importantly, he is the first exciting prospect that Montreal has had in sometime and I hope that he can help end the 21 year long drought Canada has suffered!
Decision is yours PK- hero or villain?
