Why Does St. Louis Never Win Anything?
OK that's not strictly true, the Blues took home the Presidents' Trophy 13 years ago but of the original six and the expansion six, the Blues are the only team never to have lifted the Stanley Cup. Why is that?
Alex's most recent question (one that he's had to remind me several times) is:
St. Louis hasn't made a cup final appearance since the 69/70 season but until recently, would rarely miss a post-season. So what can the boys from Missouri do differently if they want to pick up the trophy this season?
The frustrating thing about being a Blues fan is the the team is pretty good. I'd guess. Getting to the playoffs would be a good start. Of the last 10 playoffs, the Blues appeared in five of them; reaching the conference semifinals and losing the the LA Kings in 11/12.
After exhaustive research (wikipedia mostly); I reckon there's two things St. Louis need to do to break their Cup duck.
1: Score more goals
Yes. The obvious one. Last season, the Blues scored 2.58 goals per game (average) but when it got the playoffs, that number dropped to 1.67. Only Minnesota scored less.
The defensemen held up their end, only LA conceded less goals per game. The shooters need to start finding the target more if the team wants to get the final for the first time in 43 years next season. Hopefully new signings Derek Roy, Pat Cannone and Mark Mancari can step up and contribute.
2: Drink more Gatorade
Of course all teams are tired after playing a full season, 82 regular season games will take it out of anyone. The Blues seem to feel this more than the other top teams with a visible drop in output during the playoffs.
Somehow the coach and the backroom staff need to find a way to bring more energy to the forward lines, otherwise teams with more depth will continue to walk over the Blues in the postseason.
