Week Ending 03/17/23 Eastern

In a week complete with suspensions and approved division realignments, here's your quick round up for the last seven days.

Boston Bruins

Wins 3 (Senators, Panthers, Capitals)
Losses 2 (Penguins x2)

The Bruins have had a mixed week starting with a close win over the Sens and finishing with a loss to the Penguins. On Saturday, Nathan Horton embodied the spirit of a Wings legend with his own Gordie Howe Hatrick against Washington. Boston are currently sitting in a comfortable 4th in the Eastern.

Buffalo Sabres

Wins 1 (Rangers)
Losses 1 (Senators OT)

Comparatively quiet weeks for the Sabres, only three games played. They really have to start finding the net more as that playoff place gets further away. The Sabres didn't qualify for the playoffs last season and this season is starting to look no different.

Carolina Hurricanes

Wins 1 (Capitals)
Losses 2 (Capitals, Lightning)

The 'Canes are really missing Cam Ward having shipped 6 goals this week. Captain Eric Staal picked up points in each game but 2 points from a possible 6 meant that the inevitable has happened: Carolina has lost the top spot in the Southeast Division. This means they lose their automatic place in the conference top three and drop from 3rd to 8th. Time to start looking over your shoulders boys.

Florida Panthers

Wins 0
Losses 3 (Lightning, Bruins, Islanders)

3 games, 3 losses this week. The Panthers have lost their last 5 games in a row and it's no surprise they're bottom of the Eastern Conference. The Panthers have scored in every game since their 3-0 loss to the Leafs on February 18. The team currently has 7 players on the injured list and this is really having an effect on the ice. Is there time to turn this around? Looking at the number of games left, it's highly unlikely.

Montreal Canadiens

Wins 2 (Senators, Devils)
Losses 0

Quiet week for the Habs who were 2 for 2 this week, defeating the Senators 4-3 at home and the Devils 2-1 on the road. Montreal sit in a comfortable 2nd in the Eastern.

New Jersey Devils

Wins 1 (Flyers)
Losses 2 (Flyers OT, Canadiens)

The Devils' mixed season continues. Only 3 games this week compared to 5 last week. Playing the Flyers twice, the Devils beat the Flyers comfortably at home but succumbed to an overtime loss on the road. In other news, OHL goal leader Reid Boucher has been signed by the Devils.

NY Islanders

Wins 2 (Lightning, Panthers)
Losses 0

Another team with a 2 for 2 week. Both on the road. The Isles are currently sat just outside the playoff positions and the coming week looks to be a testing one. Three home games against tough opposition. Time for team points leader John Tavares to show what he's made of.

NY Rangers

Wins 0
Losses 3 (Sabres, Jets, Penguins)

The Rangers are currently a point and place behind their New York rivals. 2 goals in three games are not good enough for Callahan, Lundqvist and Co. There's a real danger of not making the playoffs for the first time since the 09/10 season.

Ottawa Senators

Wins 2 (Sabres, Jets)
Losses 2 (Bruins OT, Canadiens OT)

The Sens' decent season continues and they are currently sitting 5th in the Eastern. The Sens lost two shootouts this week to their division rivals Boston and Montreal. However wins over Buffalo and Winnipeg have steadied Ottawa's ship and they remain on course for a playoff place.

Philadelphia Flyers

Wins 1 (Devils)
Losses 1 (Devils)

The Flyers' poor season continues. Is Claude Giroux suffering the EA curse? Whatever the reason, 27 points is not going to get the Flyers into the playoffs.

Pittsburgh Penguins

Wins 4 (Boston x2, Leafs, Rangers)
Losses 0

Current conference leaders Pittsburgh continue their winning ways having not lost a game in the month of March even managing a shutout against the Rangers. A playoff place seems to be guaranteed for Crosby, Malkin and Co.

Tampa Bay Lightning

Wins 2 (Panthers, Hurricanes)
Losses 1 (Islanders)

The Bolts are still fairing better than their state cousins but hopes are looking slim as they're still 6 points off the playoff places. Forward Dana Tyrell has been recalled from the AHL to try and find the Bolts some goals.

Toronto Maple Leafs

Wins 0
Losses 3 (Jets, Penguins, Jets OT)

Poor week for the Leafs with 3 losses (5 in a row). This has seen the Leafs slip down to 6th in the Eastern. Lupul and Kessel each bagged twice during the week but the Leafs are leaking goals, conceding 12 in 3 games.

Washington Capitals

Wins 2 (Hurricanes, Sabres)
Losses 2 (Hurricanes, Bruins)

Mixed week for the Caps taking 4 points from a possible 8. The Caps currently sit 13th in the Eastern. In positive news, this week Alex Ovechkin achieved and then surpassed the the 700 point mark. Every cloud...

Winnipeg Jets

Wins 3 (Leafs x2, Rangers)
Losses 1 (Senators)

A good week for the Jets has moved them to the top of the Northeast Division and to third overall in the conference. Zach Bogosian was the shootout hero against the Leafs, scoring in the 10th shooting round.
