Should Blackhawks Trade Patrick Kane?

In the wake of his investigation for alleged sexual assault, the Chicago Blackhawks could well be shifting one of its best. Patrick Kane has been at the centre of trade talk in the last few days and the Hawks are apparently willing to listen. Despite his off-ice trouble, Kane has been one of the key figures of a tremendously successful team. Should Chicago offload him after three cup wins?

On the one hand I can understand Chicago wanting to be rid of Kane. This sort of rumor can destroy a man's reputation and should things be pressed further it could lead to a lot of lost ice time for him. Kane hasn't coated himself in glory, that is plainly obvious but does he really deserve to be ostracized already? The Blackhawks have been busy off loading their veteran players recently so how would losing a top line player really help at this point?

Another point to consider is that would any team in the NHL really touch a player who could be in court soon? Kane is one of the top right wingers in the league and could easily be traded away for some equal quality. Despite the lure of his speed and skills, arranging games around courtroom appearances is a headache most will want to avoid. Though if he is traded, Kane could open up some interesting trade avenues for a team looking for a fourth cup.

Should he be cleared by the authorities, this could make for a good story of redemption. Chicago is one place where people love a fairy tale happen and Kane bringing home another cup might be the ticket. Right now this guy has over 557 points from 556 games, the sort of form that doesn't come to the moderately gifted. I mentioned in one of my earlier posts that should he be convicted, he will find it hard getting back into hockey. The Blackhawks do seem concerned by this fact, but I feel they should hold off on any rash choices for now. Last thing they need is this guy tearing up the ice for one of their rivals.

The Blackhawks are in a tough situation here and you can't fault them for maybe looking for other options. Getting rid of Kane will be tough because he beloved by the fans that pack the United Centre. A naturally gifted scorer, replacing him won't be easy because he can instinctively link up with Jonathan Toews. Also in the last years play-offs he was joint top scorer with 23 points along with Tyler Johnson. The following weeks will define their future relationship with this guy.
