Is Hutchison New Blue Jays Ace?
After personally witnessing his complete game shut out victory in the Toronto Blue Jays 6-0 over the Chicago White Sox last night, you have to wonder whether pitcher Drew Hutchison is the new ace that the team so badly needs? Pushing his record to 4-1 this season, the 24 year old Florida native struck out 8 different batters, allowed only 4 hits and and looked in complete control, 96 pitches was all it took. Yes, he was aided by a substandard White Sox performance, but taking nothing away from the young man.
When he was selected as opening day pitcher in the Jays 6-1 win over the Yankees, few eyebrows were raised. In getting the start over more experienced candidates such as Mark Buerhle and R.A Dickey, it shows just what high hopes the organization has for this man. The bullpen has been a source of concern to the Blue Jays this season, with young talent Daniel Norris being already sent down to Triple A along with talented reliever, Miguel Castro. But Hutchison has been noted as bringing strength to this team whose bright start has been stalling of late.
What makes his game so assured though? His coolness under pressure for thing, against Jose Abreu and old teammate, Melky Cabrera- Hutchison went through them like a hot knife through butter. Also he appears to have rediscovered his fast ball that was so effective. The velocity on his ball is improving, despite his problems with his slider. His high ERA of 5.12 though is a cause for concern. Currently on Fangraphs.com, Hutchison is currently listed as 39th overall on pitching stats, though this does place his above Jon Lester and CC Sabathia. The month of April was a rough one and many experts were questioning his overall ability. At one stage, he held the majors worst ERA of 7.47! After a disastrous 10 game road trip at the end of the month where the Jays went 3-7, Hutchison was among the many held responsible. Only striking out 16% of his hitters and giving away walks like they were fashionable.
Since then he has appeared to bounce back and is now firmly displaying the confidence that led to many predicting big things for this year. Alongside Buerhle, Hutchison has the potential to be the man of the hour in future. In his last four starts, Hutchison has pitched over 26.2 innings, struck out 28 hitters and allowed only 4 walks, recording a 2.36 ERA during this time. Right now, the season maybe unravelling fast for the once promising Blue Jays side, but if they can get the pitching right then the AL East could be a whole different sto
