Should Evander Kane Leave Jets?

After last nights scathing attack by Don Cherry on Hockey Night in Canada, it appears that the critics are out on Winnipeg Jets winger Evander Kane! In recent weeks, Kane has come under criticism from the hockey world due to his decision to go for shoulder surgery which will keep him out for over 4-6 months. Doesn't sound bad on the surface, but it appears there is indeed more to the story. After being a healthy scratch for Tuesday's game against Vancouver, Kane angered his team mates by turning up for a team meeting wearing a tracksuit instead of a suit and tie!

Incensed by this apparent disrespect shown to the dress code, team mate Dustin Byfuglien allegedly threw Kane's clothes into a bath of cold water. Kane then left the rink in a rage and did not travel with the team for the pre game and did not inform the team until half an hour before game time that he would not play! After Kane's benching was made public knowledge, he has appeared to end his season prematurely. Many see this incident as the end of the road for Kane's time in Manitoba, but can the Jets do without him?

So far this season, Evander Kane has 10 goals and 12 assists and has as usual looked solid for a Winnipeg that is beginning to show signs of life. He is a talented winger there is no doubt about that and ever since the days of Atlanta Thrashers he has proven to be a key presence. But is he really irreplaceable? Against the Ovechkin's, Patrick Kane's and Tyler Seguin's of the league, I wouldn't exactly say this team would fold without him.

Trading Kane could bring about some interesting incentive for the seemingly playoff bound Jets. Also they have to contend with the fact that Kane is bringing about negative publicity for the team. This isn't the first time that this guy had made this kind of threat- lest we forget he was attempting to step out the door last season in July until being enticed to stay. His name has been at the forefront of trade rumours for a while now, the question will be how desperate are the Jets to keep a player who doesnt wish to play?

In my humble opinion, they should take whatever offers come onto the table because Kane has shown a remarkable lack of professionalism and respects not only his team but his line-mates! What is funny about this situation is that Kane really is not the superstar he appears to think he is- until he has made the All Star or won any trophies then he can act the big shot! But until then he should just keep his head down and play his hockey. In this case, Don Cherry was correct in his assessment that Kane is being " A Jerk!" some big decisions lie ahead in Manitoba.
