Dallas Stars: On The Road to Recovery?

Ever since Brett Hull's controversial goal to win the 1999 Stanley Cup against the Buffalo Sabres, fans in Texas have had a very up and down ride supporting the Dallas Stars! But this season has held an even bigger shock, a rebuilt team that looks like it has the potential to shape into something special!

Last years performance was neither glorious nor disastrous as Dallas came home 11th in the Western Conference and 5th in the Pacific Division, but their season was disrupted by the trade of Captain Brenden Morrow to Pittsburgh and Jaromir Jagr to Boston which deprived the team of their two biggest scorers and ensured they limped home to the finish! Tired with the lack of progress, former Stars hall of famer Joe Nieuwendyk was given the boot as GM and replaced by Jim Nill.

But the off season however gave this team a major shot in the arm as Canadian National Team coach Lindy Ruff took control and offensively a well played out trade got many critics interested in this team as Tyler Seguin arrived in from the Bruins in exchange for Loui Eriksson and several other players. The 21 year old had been a number two pick in 2011 but had failed to impress at TD Garden, so Dallas seeking a opportunity decided to take a gamble!

Seems like it has been a risk worth taking as Seguin has been racking up the points at the American Airlines Arena and currently sits top of the scorers chart with 41 points and his style of play has been impressing many and there now seems hope that this young man may live up to the hype that surrounds him.His emotion at scoring the shoot-out winner in his first game back in Boston was clear to see and with the franchise, Seguin could develop into a well rounded player!

Recently appointed Captain Jamie Benn follows closely behind with 37 points and the 24 year old has certainly earned his Olympic selection for Canada at Sochi this year, he may be not be quite the leader that Dallas expect just yet, but given time I can see the 'C' being a permanent part of his uniform! Rich Peverley has been another clever piece of business in the Seguin/Eriksson trade and he has held himself well on the lower lines and young man Alex Chiasson has also looked good and his 22 points have come in handy for this team.

The Stars at this point lie 10th overall in the Western Conference and are around 8 points away from Minnesota and Vancouver from the final playoff spot- stay away from the Canucks and we'll have no problems lads! It may be a long shot for this season, but I can personally guarantee this team will be in the running before long, you can throw up your 99 Cup final tapes Texas, because there may be new ones on the way soon!
